If you’re remodeling your kitchen, one of the most important decisions you’ll need to make is the material of your flooring. You’ll quickly find that the type of flooring you choose will determine how the rest of the kitchen fall into place. You’ll also discover that there are numerous options from which you can choose, including linoleum, vinyl, laminate, and natural hardwood. Below are the factors that you should consider when choosing a type of flooring for your kitchen.

Function Of The Room

When choosing a material, one of the first things you should consider is how you plan to use the kitchen. For example, are you someone who frequents the kitchen for cooking? Do you enjoy hosting family and friends? Will there be children or pets in the kitchen frequently? If so, you’ll want to pay particular attention to finding a floor that will withstand heavy wear and tear. If you find that this is the case, consider choosing linoleum, vinyl, or laminate flooring. Natural hardwood floors are a nice luxury, but they will wear down quickly when put through strain.

Tile or vinyl especially could excellent options because they are resistant to moisture. Because they are waterproof, it’s easy to clean up spills with the quick wipe of a towel. Laminate is somewhat resistant to moisture, but you’ll need to make sure that moisture does not dry on this material. If you allow moisture to dry on laminate flooring, you risk bubbling or warping.  If you expect frequent messes in your kitchen, tile or vinyl may be your best bet.

However, laminate makes for an excellent choice if you expect heavy foot traffic in your kitchen. Laminate flooring typically features four layers so that it can withstand things such as mud, stains, and even burns.

Lifespan

Another thing you’ll want to consider is the lifespan of the flooring. If you feel as though you’ll be completing another renovation in a few years, or know that your tastes change quickly and that you’ll want to alter the aesthetics of your kitchen down the road, perhaps consider flooring that is a bit cheaper and does not have as long of a lifespan. The average lifespan for flooring is:

  • Linoleum Flooring – 25 years
  • Vinyl and Laminate Flooring – 50 years
  • Natural Hardwood Flooring – 100 years

Cost

Lastly, you’ll want to factor cost into your decision. Much of the flooring available these days looks stunning while also remaining affordable. You should not break the bank on flooring that you cannot afford. Be sure to set a budget and stick to it when choosing a flooring type for your kitchen.
